My Take: By Michael Boriero

While I haven’t had a chance to review the entirety of Bill 96, Quebec’s most comprehensive attempt to bolster French language laws in the province since Bill 101, a couple things stuck out to me.
I’ve always struggled in French. It’s something that I know I need to improve if I want to continue working, as a journalist, in Quebec. The inclusion of French language courses for English-speakers who want to improve their skills is a nice touch.
However, I do have concerns with the government giving more powers to the OQLF. People will have the right to file a complaint to the OQLF, the province’s language watchdog, if they are unable to be served in French in a store.
There could be legal ramifications, and they are potentially setting up a phone hotline for complaints. I just hope this doesn’t get out of hand.
