My Take: By Michael Boriero

I’m like a lot of Canadians. Or at least, I used to be. Most of us believe Canada is a sanctuary, more civil, fair and respectful compared to our American counterparts.
But we need to stop. Canada is not perfect. Far from it, actually. We need to open our eyes to the atrocities happening here in our very own backyards.
We recently discovered 215 children in unmarked graves outside of a former residential school. And on Sunday, a white male killed four members of a Muslim family in Ontario.
They were targeted for their Islamic faith. The family of five is survived by a nine-year-old boy, who managed to escape the devastating attack with non-life-threatening injuries.
There is a sinister underbelly to Canadian culture that we choose to ignore. But hatred exists. Islamophobia exists. Our history will not change, but we need to be better.
