My Take: By Michael Boriero

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was bystander.

I was up all night Wednesday doomscrolling through Twitter as news started to spread of Russia’s unprovoked attack on Ukraine — an all-too-common practice for me these days.

I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling an overwhelming sense of helplessness. I’m often paralyzed by social media, overloaded with information, and I usually end up spiralling.

But yesterday felt different, at least for me. I was suddenly hit with the reality that I’m truly powerless in these situations. All I can do, and most of us, really, is watch from the sidelines.

We’re all about to bear witness to a full blown declaration of war unravelling in Eastern Europe thanks to the Internet and social media. And the misinformation war will soon follow it.

For all of us watching from afar, double-check your sources, and find truth in the experts on the ground.
