My Take: By Michael Boriero

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was volunteers

I think we should all take a minute to thank our volunteers in Quebec. The people who selflessly sacrifice their time, without compensation, to run events, charities, and fundraisers.

It’s obviously not limited to those three options, but my point remains the same. Whatever volunteer work you’re doing is as noble as it gets, and it’s often a forgotten and thankless job.

When I was attending hockey tournaments in my teenage years, I never gave any thought to the people who volunteered countless hours to ensure the whole operation ran smoothly.

Again, this is just a singular example that I’m using after reflecting on my own experiences. We take these people for granted. There’s no doubt about that. And now volunteers are sparse.

So the next time you’re at an event, please take a minute to appreciate the work that goes on behind the scenes.
