My Take: By Michael Boriero

The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was national pride.
Canada Day is always a special event, and no doubt everyone is gearing up for the long weekend, seeing as for many people it’s the first time celebrating the country in two years.
But while we’re all eating our hot dogs and hamburgers, drinking with friends and family, and soaking in the sun this long weekend, I think it’s also important to reflect on Canada’s faults.
For so long Canada has been labeled one of the best countries in the world. There’s no racism in Canada. Canadians treat Indigenous communities as equals. There’s no gun violence.
Unfortunately, we’ve learned the hard way that none of this is true. Sure, Canada isn’t the worst. But there’s a lot of room to grow. We’re certainly not perfect. Not even close, actually.
Being patriotic is great and all, but those rose-coloured glasses need to be taken off.
