Mixed messages in media, and especially in medical releases and research are confusing, and sometimes dangerous. Miscommunication coming from government officials or organizations creates a population that learns that they’re unable to completely trust the institutions put in place to maintain order in our societies and ensure their safety. Especially in the midst of a pandemic, when health officials make mistakes reporting to the public, or downplay high numbers (even if cases have gone down), it fuels the individuals who are already questioning the dangers associated with a virus like COVID-19. When this happens, it just creates more risk for people taking things seriously. Celebrating a decline in cases while numbers are still high or demanding a loosening of restrictions, like in our region at this very moment, is simply irresponsible. These institutions need to ensure the validity of their information before releasing anything official.
