Over the years I’ve lost support for the Olympics; there is a good reason why. I studied the Olympics and there is more to it than famous athletes coming together in one place to battle it out for a gold medal. Building the Olympic facilities doesn’t just involve construction, it also involves the displacement of people living in an insecure situation. The poor and low-income families are told to leave their homes in order to be torn down so that we, at their expense, can be entertained and spend millions on building sports facilities. Every four years, these individuals brace themselves for the inevitable. When we are made aware of the negative aspects that surround what we love, it’s not easy. We have to ask ourselves, is this something that I want to continue to contribute to? And to that end, I say no way.
