My Take: By Taylor McClure

When news of the Capitol riots came to light, it sent shockwaves across the globe. An attempted overthrow of democracy of one of the most powerful countries in the world, some have even referred to it as an attempted coup, how could this happen? After four years of Trump sitting on his throne and slowly building his MAGA army, and let’s not forget, perpetuating a state in which racism, sexism, and homophobia ruled all, the real question is: how did this not happen sooner? If we can learn anything from history, it’s that it only takes one leader, one thought, one action to put things in motion. While Capitol Hill was being overrun, Canadians were sitting at home thinking how lucky they are to be here, as if location serves as the basis of an attempted overthrow. It’s time to take off the blindfolds.
