The format of a My Take is 150 words – no more, no less – to express an opinion on a different topic each week. This week’s topic was the vax tax.
It seems pretty clear that Legault’s vax tax is meant to be a message to the people who have chosen to actively protest the vaccine. It opens the door for the 80 or so per cent of Quebecers who’ve gotten the shot to feel smug and superior, but it also tramples all over groups of people who have doubts about healthcare because they’ve been burned by the system in the past.
It’s not a surprising plan from the government that denies the existence of systemic prejudices, but it is also not a good solution.
It can be really tempting to look at problems as if they all have yes or no answers. If there are only two choices, then it is much easier to know that you are right, and those who don’t agree with you are wrong.
But that’s not how the world works.
