Team Cheal secured first place in the U-21 Brosse Performance 2022 Provincial Championships in Kénogami last weekend. Being the first provincials held since their cancellation in 2020, the local team members Lauren Cheal, Alexia Perron, Jessie Sutherland, Leah Andrews, Annkatrin Perron, Jeff Cheal (coach) were excited to be back on the ice and to bring home the gold medal.

“Three years ago, we were ranked number one going into the provincials and it was cancelled because of covid,” said Lauren Cheal, skip of the team. The cancellations were heartbreaking since expectations for the team were high. “Finally having a chance to come back this season lit a fire under us to do well because we weren’t able to do the sport we love during the pandemic,” explained Cheal. Having this passion to do well certainly benefitted them as the team excelled in the Provincial’s preliminaries.

“We started out the tournament in a round robin and got through the round robin undefeated,” explained Cheal. With a record 5 wins 0 losses, the team was seeded directly into the finals where they faced off against team Daigle.

Though nerves were high for Team Cheal, they played a magnificent game, ending with a score of 9-1, a rather dominate game for the team. Team Cheal is certainly excited with their recent win; however, Team Cheal is currently focused on preparing for the next big tournament.
