Among the few things one can really count on in this life is the fact that at 10 a.m. on January 1st one can go to the public beach at North Hatley to watch Carleton Monk and Steve Shearan defy the elements for the annual polar bear swim. Carleton has been doing this for 17 years, and Steve a good decade. This year the only one to join them was Heidi Monk, who has been hardened to this activity by joining her father on and off over the years, and by a recent visit to Antarctica.
