For a second time, North Hatley council has confirmed the bilingual status of the town.
The motion was adopted during Tuesday evening’s council meeting.
The council proposed that the municipality of North Hatley announce its intention to maintain its bilingual status to its citizens and to the Minister of the French Language and the Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF), even if the number of citizens whose mother tongue is English is less than 50 per cent.
“We had already adopted that resolution on the previous council, it’s just we think it’s better to air on the side of caution and re-pass the resolution showing our interest in retaining our bilingual status as a municipality,” explained Mayor Marcella Davis-Gerrish during the meeting.
