At Monday night’s municipal council meeting the North Hatley council voted five to two in favour of allowing the partial demolition and transformation of the old Connaught Home by Massawippi Retirement Communities (MRC). “We’re pleased with the outcome,” said North Hatley Mayor Michael Page, noting that there was applause in the council chamber following the decision. In March North Hatley’s Town Planning and Heritage Committee (CCUP), whose role is to advise the Municipal Council on matters of town planning and heritage protection, submitted an unfavourable recommendation to the municipal council on the requests made for partial demolition and transformation of the old home following a visit to the building. That unfavourable recommendation led the council not to renew a permit previously granted to MRC, which the local nonprofit was looking to extend. On April 1, 2019, the council adopted a resolution to hold a public information meeting followed by a public consultation meeting. See full story in the Wednesday, June 5 edition of The Record.
