The annual service of commemoration for the Canadian Organ and Tissue Donors Association (ACDO in French) took place at Sherbrooke’s Saint-Michel Basilica Cathedral on Friday. The ceremony marked a return to the pre-pandemic format, inviting the family and friends of hundreds of organ donors from across the province to receive the posthumous “ambassador of health” medal on behalf of their loved one.
This year 200 people were awarded the honour by Quebec’s Lieutenant-Governor J. Michel Doyon, who referred to organ donation as “an act of generousity without equal.”
“After two years of absence for reasons that we are all well aware of, I am particularly happy, but also moved to return to this tradition of recognizing those who have given up a part of themselves in the name of prolonging the life of another,” Doyon said, adding, “there are no words to match this greatest of gifts.”
