Phelps Helps was presented with a $25,000 cheque from Canada Post’s Community Foundation on Thursday morning in Stanstead. The grant will go directly toward their Spark program which supports local elementary school students.
Phelps Helps’ mission is to decrease the local high school dropout rate through educational and career support. Over the past 10 years since its inception, the organization has grown from one high school tutoring program to six programs that support children, teenagers, and adults aged six to thirty. They support 450 people in total, 200 of whom they see weekly. Their success rate is impressive to say the least. Program Director Katie Lowry says, “Of the students who have attended 20 high school sessions with Phelps, we’ve had zero dropout. That’s really encouraging.”
