Public health director steps down April 2

CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS announced Thursday that Dr. Alain Poirier will leave his position as director of public health for the Eastern Townships as of April 2.

The statement lauded Poirier’s nearly three years at the helm in this region, notably his management since the outset of the coronavirus pandemic.

Poirier will promptly head north to take on new challenges in a new jurisdiction. In April, he will begin as director of public health for the Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay.

CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS celebrated a career defined by passion and accomplishment in Quebec and internationally. A desire to deepen his understanding and service to the health of indigenous communities was listed among Poirier’s motivations for accepting his new position.

Speaking to The Record recently to mark two years since the declaration of the public health emergency, Poirier said his replacement had been identified but could not yet be revealed. Yesterday’s CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS statement said an announcement about the new regional public health director will be made as soon as the process to appoint Poirier’s successor is complete.
