Quebec moves ahead with ­­‘de-prescription’ of anti-­psychotic meds project

Record Staff – Although the OPUS-AP (optimiser les pratiques, les usages, les soins et les services – antipsychotiques) approach – which focused on improving practices, use, care and services related to antipsychotics seemed initially ambitious, the results of Phase one of the project have passed the test. According to Marguerite Blais, Quebec’s Minister responsible for Elders and caregivers, the research conducted between January and October 2018 in 24 long term care homes in Quebec showed that that among the 220 residents for whom de-prescription was tried, 86 per cent stopped or decreased the use of antipsychotics without returning to disruptive behavior related to their illness.
