Renters’ ­Association confronts local MPs for safe ­affordable housing ­options for women

Local Liberal Members of Parliament Marie-Claude Bibeau (Compton-Stanstead), Élisabeth Brière (Sherbrooke) and Lyne Bessette (Brome-Missisquoi) got a visit yesterday from members of the Association des Locateurs de Sherbrooke (ALS) drawing attention to the need for more safe, affordable housing, especially for women.
The demonstrations were organized in conjunction with the recently held 12 Days of Action to end Violence Against Women by the ALS women’s committee.
According to the committee, women are often victims of harassment, violence and sexual assault and can essentially become prisoners in their own homes, which should be a safe space. For women who are victims of conjugal violence, the availability of safe, low-cost housing can play in an important role in their ability to escape a dangerous situation.
