The Eastern Townships returning to a COVID-19 red zone means restaurants must shut their doors to the public once again, as per the Quebec government’s health and safety measures, but owners are tired of feeling expendable.
Simon Proulx, the owner of Minton in Hatley, said he heard about the zone change through one of his clients. He received a phone call during the restaurant’s Mother’s Day service, warning him that the region was turning red on Monday.
“It was a bit of a shock and if I’m not mistaken, I think it’s the first time they do a major change like that through the weekend without a press conference,” said Proulx. “It was just really fast and without notice.”
While he created a contingency plan for such an occasion, the restaurant has a take-out service called Minton chez soi, it won’t be enough to generate revenue. Minton isn’t in the fast food or take-out business, he explained, it is not built that way.
