Richmond students pledge to choose kindness for Pink Shirt Day

Schools across the Eastern Townships School Board will celebrate Pink Shirt Day in support of anti-bullying awareness this Wednesday, Feb. 23.

Richmond Regional High School kicked off the event Tuesday with in-class presentations by members of student council and the Queer Straight Alliance along with teachers.

At lunch hour, a rush of staff and students flooded the lobby to sign tree silhouettes, painted by art teacher Julia Barrowman, on a banner emblazoned with the slogan, A Pledge to Choose Kindness.

As hot pink sharpie signatures sprouted on the stretching branches like leaves, boxes filled with free Kindness Start Here t-shirts quickly emptied. Fluorescent pink toques and t-shirts bounced off into the hallway crowds.

The 150 t-shirts were enough for roughly half the student body, with a few going to participating teachers too. On Wednesday, students are encouraged to wear these or a pink t-shirt from home and gather for a group photo at lunch hour to show their support of anti-bullying efforts.
