Rock Forest recreation centre temporarily closes ice rink due to Legionella presence

The Centre récréatif de Rock Forest (CRRF) was forced to temporarily close its ice rink after the city of Sherbrooke discovered high levels of Legionella bacteria in the cooling tower.
The cooling tower, which is located outside, is used to maintain the rink’s ice surface. The water in the tower is reportedly tested frequently and on Oct. 17 the city received a report indicating a significant presence of Legionella, which can pose a potential risk to public health.
Legionella is known to cause Legionnaires’ disease, which is a type of pneumonia. The symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath, fever, muscle aches and headaches. However, the city has stated that there are no cases of Legionnaires’ disease linked to the rink.
