Saint-Denis-de-Brompton town council stands by its fire protection agreement

A petition calling for a referendum on the proposed takeover of the Sherbrooke Fire Department in Saint-Denis-de-Brompton garnered 741 signatures, however, it did little to sway Mayor Daniel Veilleux during the municipal council meeting on June 6.
The Comité d’opposition de Saint-Denis-de-Brompton (CoSDDB) tabled the petition on Monday. According to a press release, it took about three weeks to collect all of the signatures, and there could be more out there, but the committee felt it was rushed into taking action.
The CoSDDB claims the petition represents approximately 32 per cent of the adult population. The committee wants transparency from the municipal council, and a thorough consultation forum before making a final decision about the future of the local fire protection service.
In a phone interview on Tuesday, CoSDDB spokesperson Michel Inkel told The Record that the town and Mayor Veilleux have not been forthright with the information that led them to strike a 20-year tentative agreement with Sherbrooke for fire protection and first responder services.
