School fees bill adopted

Record Staff – Bill 12, the Coalition Avenir Quebec’s bill on school fees, was passed in the National Assembly Thursday by a vote of 66 to 49. Entitled, “An Act to clarify the scope of the right to free education and to allow the regulation of certain financial contributions that may be required,” the bill aims to establish in law who is responsible for what fees when it comes to schooling. “With the adoption of Bill 12, we have formally put an end to a situation that has left details open to interpretation and, contrary to the Liberals and the PQ, our government is acting responsibly to ensure that this does not happen again,” Said Jean-François Roberge, Quebec’s Minister of Education and Higher Education. “No more fuzziness and excessive fees. Today, the National Assembly ensures not only more clarity, equity and accessibility, it also ensures that every dollar invested in education benefits students.” See full story in the Friday, June 7 edition of The Record.
