The conseil d’administration de la Corporation de développement de l’aéroport de Sherbrooke will present its plans for a commercial link project to the Sherbrooke municipal council next month.
Shawn Young, board member and spokesperson for the airport development council, said in an interview that he cannot divulge too much just yet. He assured The Record that it will be fresh and innovative compared to previous projects involving the airport.
“The earlier we can get talking about this and get into people’s minds that this is a different project, it’s a new project, it’s part of kickstarting the Eastern Townships’ economy once the pandemic slows down,” said Young.
The Sherbrooke Airport in Cookeshire-Eaton has been a contentious subject for local politicians, business owners and residents for nearly its entire existence. The airport hasn’t provided commercial flights since 2009.
Young acknowledged that the topic carries a lot of baggage. Quebecers in the Eastern Townships have heard many promises and ideas in the last 20 years, he explained, and nothing has really panned out. However, Young believes this time it could be different.
