The fate of the large crucifix hanging on the wall in Sherbrooke’s city hall will come to a vote in October following a discussion in favour of removing the cultural heritage artifact during a council meeting on Tuesday.
The crucifix became a central topic several months ago, according to Sherbrooke Mayor Évelyne Beaudin, when Claude Charron, city council member for the Lennoxville district, relayed residents’ concerns of a religious symbol prominently displayed in the council chamber.
Beaudin explained that she consulted with the local archdiocese about the possible removal of the crucifix. And while she didn’t necessarily get approval from the church, the archbishop also made it clear that this is a political matter, so the decision lands on the city’s elected officials.
