With the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Friday, the Communauté Autochtone de Sherbrooke is expressing its frustration with the provincial government and its disappointing efforts to address, and recognize, systemic racism in Quebec.
Communauté Autochtone de Sherbrooke President Michel Fontaine told The Record that while there has been more acceptance for Indigenous communities, there is still a lot toxic behaviour and attitude towards Indigenous peoples, one that is far from acceptance and reconciliation.
“There is a lack of awareness of certain elected officials regarding Indigenous communities and recognizing everything we have lived through over several centuries. It’s a shame for me personally, I’m not speaking for the community, but myself,” Fontaine said in a phone interview.
