Just over two months ago, Fifteen-year-old Jonathan Beauvais of Sherbrooke’s College du Mont-Saint Anne private boys school was in the middle of a soccer practice when he started to feel a strange sensation in his chest. Within a matter of minutes of having stepped off the field, the young boy was unconscious on the ground receiving CPR from his coach. Five minutes after that the boy was being loaded into an ambulance bound for the Hotel-Dieu hospital in Fleurimont where he would be kept in intensive care to monitor a severe arrhythmia in his heart.
Beauvais survived that brush with death, but was left at risk of the whole incident happening again thanks to an inherent electrical issue in his heart. On Monday the CIUSSS de L’Estrie-CHUS, the Eastern Townships’ regional health board, announced that the boy will able to go back to living a fairly normal life because he is now the youngest person in Canada to have an S-ICD cardiac defibrillator installed in his body.
“At first it was a bit scary because it is new,” Beauvais said, “but to hear the doctors talk about how would will unfold made me feel a lot better.”
