When the Theatre des Petits Lanternes started its Rivières de Lumières lantern festival in 2015, it was as a part of a three-year plan aimed at creating a living fairytale for the local community. After that first year surpassed all expectations in terms of popularity and participation, Kristelle Holliday, the Executive Director of the theatre, said that the team of partners behind the annual event quickly got to work on planning how to make the event last beyond the three years that it was originally funded for.
