Spring break road blocks a possibility in Quebec

Quebec Public Security Minister Geneviève Guilbault said the province is considering setting up roadblocks to curb non-essential travel between regions and in neighbouring provinces during March break. The concern, Guilbault said Wednesday, is the rise in more contagious COVID-19 variants, a high concentration of which have been detected in Ontario.
Several different measures are being considered, Guilbault explained. More details are expected next week.
The most recent data on the evolution of COVID-19 in Quebec shows 989 new cases, bringing the total number of people infected to 272,726, of which 251,620 have now recovered. The data also reports 34 new deaths, for a total of 10,112.
The number of hospitalizations decreased by 22 compared to the previous day, for a cumulative total of 918. Among those, the number of people in intensive care increased by three, for a total of 148. The province said 3,174 doses of vaccine were administered Wednesday, for a total of 266,590. To date, Quebec has received 310,425 doses.
In the Estrie region 48 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed, bringing the local total to 10,978). There were also two new deaths, one from the general population and one from Résidence ExcelSoins in Knowlton.
