SQ warns businesses of ongoing fraud

Record Staff – The Sûreté du Québec, quebec’s provincial police force, is reminding business establishments to be aware of “phishing” scams targeting several commercial brands. The scam involves the suspect communicating with an employee of a branch of the targeted company and identifying himself as an upper-level staffer at the brand’s head office. As the scam continues, the suspect informs the target of some fraud in progress or of technical difficulties experienced by customers in connection with prepaid cards, such as iTunes or Google play cards. The suspect then instructs the employee to disclose the activation codes on the back of prepaid cards in the branch for verification. See full story in the Monday, Feb. 11 edition of The Record.
