The uncertain future of the building at 575 Dufferin Street in Stanstead is raising some concern among local and provincial heritage groups, but Stanstead Mayor Jody Stone told The Record that the problems with the structure are nothing new.
“This is something that’s been going on for quite some time,” the mayor said, sharing that permission to demolish the heritage building had already been granted to a previous owner in the early 2000s before the property was bought up on a commitment to fix it up.
“The new owner came along in 2005 and said everything would be done to save the building, but here we are now, and very little work has been done.”
While Stone has only been in his role since last fall’s election, he said that the previous council had an inspection done in 2019 that pointed to massive structural issues.
