Stanstead municipal council: resident voices concern over Canusa traffic

Stanstead resident Sylvie Boudreau brought up the issue of Traffic on Canusa Street at Monday’s meeting of the municipal council.
Traffic backs up with vehicles heading toward Beebe, Quebec’s Main Street as Quebecers go into the United States, as they did last weekend, during holiday weekends and vacations. Some drivers prefer to go through customs in Beebe Plain, Vt. rather than line up on Autoroute 55 and Interstate 91, but that can tie up traffic for those trying to get to downtown Beebe. It is also an inconvenience for residents on the American side of Canusa to go anywhere. They must check in at US Customs before even going to Derby Line.
Stanstead Mayor Philippe Dutil says he will ask the Quebec Ministry of Transportation (MTQ) who is responsible for keeping traffic moving on Canusa Street during times of high volume.
It appears that over the weekend US Customs agents were directing drivers going east on Canusa and lining up for customs to continue to Main Street, turn around, and line up there.
