“The church on the two dollar bill” is getting a facelift

Saint Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Melbourne is going back to its roots, starting this week. The church, which dates back to 1842 and holds as its claim to fame an appearance in the landscape of Melbourne county that graced the back of the two dollar bill between 1954 and 1975, is about to undergo a significant renovation that will return the building to the look and style of its early days while also reinforcing its structure for the future.

“We are going back to the prior state of the church,” explained architect Rémi Petit. “We are closing windows that were opened in the sixties. We are building a new porch that is more like the porch that was there at the beginning of the 20th century. It’s like we’re going back in time.”
