A dozen Townships-based artists gathered in front of Sherbrooke’s Granada Theatre on Jan. 5 to voice their concerns for their legal rights under the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
While demonstrating, the artists also publically signed a poster that read “Être Artiste, tout un contrat” (Being an artirst, quite the contract). The poster was put on display on Wellington Street for a little over an hour with hopes of attracting public attention to the working conditions of artists. Passersby were encouraged to sign their name on the poster and talk to local talent.
Among those in attendance at the demonstration was Sherbrooke-based painter Véronique Hamel, also known by her artistic alias “Quenick”. To Hamel, the working conditions of artists in Quebec are deplorable and need to change to encourage culture.
