Townships Liberals abstain from vote to drop court cases involving First Nations children

On Monday an opposition motion put forward in the House of Commons by NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh calling for the federal government to stop legal proceedings against a set of court rulings involving First Nations children received wide ranging support. A total of 271 Members of Parliament voted in favour of the non-binding motion across all parties, but 65 Liberal MPs abstained, including all three representatives of the party in the Eastern Townships: Brome-Missisquoi’s Lyne Bessette, Sherbrooke’s Élisabeth Brière, and Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister and Compton-Stanstead MP Marie-Claude Bibeau.
