Transportation issues remain unresolved a week before school starts

The Eastern Townships School Board (ETSB), like the rest of the parents in the province with school-aged children, is waiting on the edge of its seat wondering if contract negotiations with carriers will be reached before the first day of school on Tuesday, Aug. 30.
The ETSB is in a unique situation because schools and centres in its eastern sector are served by drivers employed by the board, using a fleet of busses owned by the ETSB. The western sector, on the other hand, contracts out its transportation services to other carriers who, despite being in negotiations since last winter, have yet to reach an agreement with the province.
During its May board meeting ETSB Secretary General Éric Campbell sounded the alarm about potential transportation issues for the coming school year, citing rising fuel prices, contracts with carriers expiring in June, and labour shortages.
