The level 3 students in the Santé Globale concentration at l’Escale High School in Val-des-Sources (formerly known as Asbestos) are organizing a fundraiser for Leucan Estrie in honour of Alix Marcoux, a student who died of cancer last year. Beginning at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 5, participating students will form teams to pedal on stationary bikes at the school in a 24-hour relay.
While the students pedal, an organizing committee of four people: Amélie Fournier-Dubois, Yanick Gendron, Yannik Scrosati and Geneviève Paquin will host the “24-hour Bike Challenge – Alix Marcoux telethon” live on the l’Escale Facebook page and likely via Youtube, under the direction of the cinema concentration and their teacher Yanick Gendron. Several performances, testimonials and interviews will be broadcast throughout the 24 hours lasting until Friday, May 6, at 4 p.m.
Alix Marcoux’s brother will cycle for 12 hours to honour his sister’s memory. The students hope to accumulate as much money as possible for Leucan, to recognize the way that the organization supported the Marcoux family throughout this ordeal. According to Paquin, an initial goal of $5,000 was set, but the support for the initiative in advance was such that $4,770 had been raised by Wednesday afternoon.

“In the Santé Globale concentration, students must choose a cause for which they will be involved. Very naturally, they picked Leucan to support their classmate,” said Paquin, the Physical Education and Health Teacher in level 3 Santé Globale Concentration. “They are very motivated and committed. They take it seriously. Such a project requires a lot of time and involvement and the school team got involved instantly to support the students and their initiative. I hope our students will remember that they can make a difference, that perseverance through adversity is important and leads to great accomplishment and how solidarity is important to succeed.”
