In what has become a tradition in certain parts of the Townships, church bells rang out more than 400 times at 11a.m. on Monday to “sound the alarm” for the planet on Earth Day. “We’ve been ringing the bells here for about eight years,” Reflected Carole Martignacco of UUEstrie, the Unitarian Universalist community in North Hatley.
Although the idea is not unique to the Townships, having been inspired by action at the Copenhagen climate conference in 2009, Martignacco explained that it was she and local United Church Minister Mead Baldwin who got the movement going locally.
