Whooping cough numbers up

Record Staff – Since the beginning of 2019, 24 cases of pertussis (whooping cough) have been reported in the territory of the CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS. The average of the last five years for the same period is 12 cases. Pertussis is a highly contagious disease that is characterized by severe coughing. It is caused by a bacterium traveling in the droplets projected into the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. According to a recent press release from the CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS, vaccination is the best way to protect yourself against whooping cough. “The vaccine is 85 per cent effective when all doses have been administered,” the press release says. If a child has been in contact with an infected person, it is suggested they call Info-Santé (811) to learn about preventive measures.
