By Steve Blake – One in five adults age 16 to 65 in Quebec struggle with low literacy, according to information provided by the Yamaska Literacy Council (YLC). Tales for Tots is an organization of volunteers working to increase literacy in children in the Town of Brome Lake. The goal is to get books into the hands of children at home. Literacy is more than reading and writing, says Wendy Seys, the executive director of YLC. “It’s about how we use information.” She said most people have some ability to read and write but the question is the degree of understanding what they read. YLC is a non-profit literacy organization in Brome-Missisquoi dedicated to improving literacy skills. See full story in the January 15 edition of the Brome County News.
