The Alliance du personnel professionnel et technique de la santé et des services sociaux (APTS) held a vigil Monday evening to pay respects to the two young Direction de la protection de la jeunesse (DPJ) social workers who lost their lives last week. The two workers, women between the ages of 23 and 26, died by suicide, once again sounding the alarm in Quebec’s youth protection system. They worked at the DPJ in Montreal. Sonia Bélanger, the head of the CIUSSS du Centre-Sud-de-l’Île-de-Montréal, said the tragedy sent a “shock wave in our establishments.” In a news conference last Wednesday, Bélanger provided no further comments as the Montreal police open an investigation.
