On Monday an opposition motion put forward in the House of Commons by NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh calling for the federal government to stop legal proceedings against a set of court rulings involving First Nations children received wide ranging support. A total of 271 Members of Parliament voted in favour of the non-binding motion across all parties, but 65 Liberal MPs abstained, including all three representatives of the party in the Eastern Townships: Brome-Missisquoi’s Lyne Bessette, Sherbrooke’s Élisabeth Brière, and Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister and Compton-Stanstead MP Marie-Claude Bibeau.
