Personal opinions from public figures inherently carry the weight of the legitimacy of the platform the public figure belongs to. Writing these takes every Friday, I’m aware that despite being part of a specific, established part of the paper that is clear and distinct from regular reporting, what I say will be associated with The Record. I’m fortunate that each week, I have the privilege to say what’s important to me and why. While I don’t hide my beliefs to the point of feeling dishonest while I work, I also believe that the more opinions one shares, the more one risks undermining their credibility as a reporter. I strive to be an approachable and trusted member of the press, and I wouldn’t want to make someone distrustful of me because of my take on issues that are important to me and impact my personal well-being.
