By Emilie Hackett, Special to the Record – Originally built in 1959 to house Bishop’s University’s library and archives collection, the John Bassett Memorial Library was renovated in 2017 and 2018 to reveal the new Library Learning Commons (LLC). In its first year as a learning common, the LLC received an Outstanding Achievement Award in Education from the Lennoxville Borough in February. The Record met with the University librarian, Catherine Lavallée-Welch, to learn more about the LLC’s vision. Lavallée-Welch arrived at Bishop’s University this fall after working as Library director at the University of South Florida and the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse for over 13 years. “Those libraries were built in the 1950s and were more the bunker type,” explained Lavallée-Welch. “The LLC is just so welcoming and inspiring. It’s a special place when the institution is willing to support a building like this so much and has the drive and inspiration to make it happen in the first place.” See full story in the Monday, March 4 edition of The Record.
