The Régie intermunicipale de prévention et de protection incendie Memphrémagog Est sent 40 firefighters to Stanstead East early Friday morning to contain a fire that had engulfed a large cattle barn located on the grounds of Grenier Farm.
The fire completely destroyed the barn, killing around 140 cows trapped inside. The fire department received a phone call at roughly 2 a.m., according to Battalion Chief Chris Goodsell. A passerby made the call after noticing something unusual in the distance.
“The fire had been burning for quite some time before we got alerted, before anyone saw it,” said Goodsell. “It’s at the end of a dead end road and if you look on google maps, the dead end road is not too far from the highway.”
