Since the beginning of the pandemic, fines have been one of the main methods of enforcing public health laws. The implementation of an 8 p.m. curfew in early January increased the potential for Covid-related fines.
Martin Carrier, media relations officer for the Sherbrooke Police Service, said that 319 fines have been handed out since Jan. 9 in Sherbrooke for violating curfew.
Carrier added that since the beginning of the pandemic, over 400 tickets were given out in Sherbrooke for illegal gatherings, the other common Covid-related offence.
Eastern Townships communities outside of the city of Sherbrooke are patrolled by the Sûreté du Québec. A representative from the force said that in the period between Jan. 11 to Feb. 14, 111 people in the Estrie region (in SQ jurisdiction) received fines for violating curfew.
