Sherbrooke residents to see 4.77 per cent tax hike in 2016 budget

Sherbrooke’s city council approved its 2016 budget on Monday night, signing the residents of the city up for a four per cent tax increase over the coming year in the name of promoting financial security.

“Yes it’s a lot, it’s a significant effort we’re asking of our taxpayers,” said Mayor Bernard Sévigny, “but in that 4.77 per cent increase there is two per cent that goes directly into repaving roads on our deteriorating road network.”

As a result of this approach, the city will be able to contribute an unprecedented $15.9 million to road work in the coming year and that, according to the Mayor, in the name of bringing a crumbling road system back up to a functional level.
